Reproduction and the Body Politic
A discussion series with Rhea Hirshman (rheahirshman@mac.com)
Monday evenings from 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. at CMI

Based on a course Rhea taught for many years at UConn, this series will explore the meanings attributed to the ability to give birth and examine some of the social and historical dynamics that make choices about this deeply personal act “political.” Where appropriate we will, with the input of our cantor and rabbi, also consider Reform Jewish perspectives.

Since discussions are richer when participants have some common knowledge, I will provide material for you to read (or watch). Beginning with the second session, please be prepared for 60-90 minutes of “homework.”

March 23. Health, Rights, and Justice. An introduction to reproductive politics.

March 30. Patrolling the Womb. From the eugenics movement to today’s pregnancy police.

April 6. Danger vs. Dignity. The convoluted history of U.S. abortion politics.

April 13. Making Humans. The promises and perils of reproductive technologies.

For security purposes, please register in advance.
